The Des Moines County Humane Society is dedicated to the welfare of all animals in Des Moines County, IA. With the financial and volunteer support of community members, DMCHS operates an adoption program within the city-owned Burlington Animal Shelter at 2000 N. Roosevelt Avenue. Thousands of homeless companion animals have been saved from being euthanized and found new families thanks to the support of community members like you. DMCHS is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization. It receives no tax dollars to support activities. The shelter depends entirely on donations, contributions, gifts and memorials.

Adoption Process

Dog adoptions are $110.00 and cat adoptions are $85.00 (cash or check only, no credit cards at this time). Included in any adoption is the spay or neuter surgery, vet visit, first two sets of basic vaccines, heartworm test (dogs), feline testing (cats) as well as a rabies vaccine. An approved application is required for all dog adoptions. On certain dog breeds, proof of a homeowner's or renter's insurance policy covering that breed of dog may be required. Cats/kittens are available on a "first come, first served" basis. Other Shelter adoption policies include: The adopter or primary owner must provide proof of legal age and be able to provide reasonable means of support for an animal. If the adopter rents his/her residence, he or she should secure landlord permission prior to adopting an animal. The Humane Society may ask for proof of landlord permission. No animal will be adopted to anyone who refuses to have it spayed/neutered. We reserve the right to refuse adoption to anyone.
