D.a.w.g.s. Prison Program - Pottsville Pet Shelter

The purpose of this program is to rescue dogs from shelters, place them in a training program, and then adopt them out to their forever homes. In an effort to give them a second chance at life, the dogs are paired up with inmates at Three Local Prisons they provide the dogs with basic obedience training, socialization, and love. A very strict screening process is utilized when selecting both dog and inmate to ensure that a positive result is made. The inmates learn from professional trainers Amy and Steve Eckert, owners and operators of Brierwood Kennels, Pottsville, PA, to teach their partnering dog basic obedience commands such as sit, stay, down, heal, and various other basic commands over a period of 4 to 6 weeks. The dogs live with the inmates 24/7 where they will learn how to socialize with other individuals and be provided with a routine of eating, crating, and toilet training. At the conclusion of their training, the dogs will remain with their partnering inmates until they find their forever home. All dogs in this program are spayed/neutered, up to date on all shots, dewormed, flea treated, vetted, and microchipped. This program is also advantageous to the inmates who participate because it gives them the ability to provide a positive experience knowing that they are helping a very special animal have a second chance at life.
