It is the mission of the Columbus-Lowndes Humane Society to protect animals from suffering and cruelty, to provide care for animals afflicted by neglect, abandonment and exploitation, and to enhance the lives of animals and people through education, adoption and compassion.
The Columbus Lowndes Humane Society tries to make the adoption process open, easy and fun! Adoptions are first-come, first served. You must come to the shleter to complete your adoption and make sure you bring a photo ID, as it is required to complete adoption paperwork. We are open for pet adoptions Monday - Friday, from 11:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m., and Saturday, 11:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m. Visit - When you enter the front door, our cat room is to the right. You won't be able to miss all the whiskers and purring! Feel free to have a look around. If you're looking for a dog or puppy, just tell someone at the front desk and they can take you to where they are located. If you're looking for a specific size, age, or temperment of animal, please let our staff know that as well. Being around them every day, we get to know them pretty well and can point you towards the ones that will best fit your needs. Play - Once you've found an animal that you think will make a great addition to your home, we encourage you to spend some time with it. Pet. Play. Talk. Laugh. Interaction is key to seeing if you feel comfortable with the animal and it with you. We are also happy to set up a time for you to bring in any pets that you already own to see how they interact, so there are no surprises when you get home. Adopting a pet is a big commitment. We want you to be sure that it is the right decision for you and your family before you leave CLHS. Apply - Once you're confident you've found a good match for your home, family and lifestyle, you simply fill out our Adoption Application. We will check your veterinarian reference, and if you live in an apartment, we will verify that you are allowed to have pets. You will also need to provide a driver's license or photo ID along with the application. Fees - Dogs: Small dogs/puppies $130 with vet reference; no vet ref will have to also purchase 6 months heartworm prevention; Med-Large dogs $100 with vet reference; no vet ref will have to also purchase 6 months heartworm prevention; Speciality dogs $130 with vet reference; no vet ref will have to also purchase 6 months heartworm prevention; Senior dogs $70 with vet reference; no vet ref will have to also purchase 6 months heartworm prevention. Dogs ONLY are microchipped as well as part of their adoption fee. Going home! Once you are approved and have paid your adoption fee you're almost done! If the pet you selected is already spayed or neutered, you may take it home that same day. However, if it still needs to be spayed or neutered, it will likely be two days before you can pick your new addition up and take him/her home. No animal will leave the shelter without being spayed or neutered.
