The Animal Control Division, supervised by the Operations Bureau Commander, is tasked with the enforcement of city ordinances and state laws relating to the control and protection of animals. One full-time Animal Control Officer, one cross-trained police officer and a part-time Shelter Aide operate and maintain the shelter in accordance with state laws. Animal Control Officers attend in-service training which provides updates on laws, procedures, and techniques.
Colonial Heights Animal Shelter adopts animals to loving homes and works with 501(c)3 rescue organizations. We will adopt to residents outside of VA, but animals must be spayed/neutered before leaving the shelter. All animals adopted from the shelter will be spayed or neutered. Our adoption fee is only $10.00 plus the cost of the spay or neuter surgery. All animals recieve a certificate for a free veterinary exam and a reduced fee spay/neuter certificate from the SPCA in Colonial Heights. Fees must be paid by cash or check ONLY.
