FOUNDED by Roberta Gottlieb, Chiquita Chihuahua Rescue is a 501 (c)(3) non-profit organization dedicated to saving small breed dogs from the high kill metropolitan Phoenix shelters. THE overwhelming majority of stray dogs in Phoenix enter the two Maricopa County Shelters. The Arizona Humane Society picks up injured strays with their unique Emergency Medical Animal Technician ambulances. The overall annual intake is approximately 80,000 animals. Almost 200 + enter the shelters daily. Those without any type of identification are given a 72 hour stray hold, then most end up on “The List”. Owner surrenders can be euthanized at any time. Maricopa County has the 2nd highest kill rate for shelter animals in the entire United States. 52% make it out alive……And the two most common breeds in our shelters are pit bull mixes and chihuahuas. THIS is why Chiquita Chihuahua Rescue has chosen to specifically focus primarily on the chihuahuas who are at most urgent need of rescue: THOSE ON THE EUTHANASIA LIST. WE also take in dogs with medical needs exceeding what the shelter clinic can provide, and frequently “uber-seniors”, who get their lab work, dental surgeries, lots of TLC, and then live out the remainder of their lives in sanctuary at the Rancho. EACH dog is cared for in a home environment, allowed to set their own pace for emotional and physical recovery, fed premium pet food, and receives exceptional veterinary care which at a minimum includes being spayed/neutered, vaccinated and microchipped.
Step one is to fill out an adoption application. Once recieved we will contact you within 48 hours to provide additional information and if approved, set up a home visit. When that is approved then the dog is adopted to you at that time, including filling out an adoption contract and collection of adoption fees.
