Castaway Pet Rescue - Libertyville Pet Shelter

Castaway Pet Rescue

The mission and vision for Castaway Pet Rescue is to save dogs of all sizes and all breeds by placing them into loving, forever homes. We are an all-volunteer, foster home based, certified 501(c)(3) dog rescue organization based in northern Illinois. We do not have a physical shelter. Instead, we operate primarily through our foster homes, online databases and at adoption events/expos. The majority of our animals come from animal control groups and open admission shelters throughout Chicago-land or the Midwest, where overcrowding and overpopulation lead to the euthanasia of millions of healthy, friendly pets every year. We are committed to providing the dogs that come into Castaway Pet Rescue with the best possible care while they wait for their forever homes by acclimating them to life outside of a shelter and providing the appropriate veterinary care needed. We also serve our community and adopters by educating and encouraging responsible pet ownership with an emphasis on the need for spaying and neutering. We also do our best to break down the stereotypes of many “bully” breeds. We never euthanized animals due to space or time constraints, but we may elect to euthanize in the event of a severe, untreatable/debilitating illness or extremely dangerous behavioral concerns. Because we do not kill to make space, however, we cannot take in every animal that needs help. Because our foster homes are the backbone of Castaway, and to help our organization run smoothly, it is our goal to provide the best experience possible. We encourage each foster home to be as involved as they are comfortable with and allow them the freedom to foster based on their needs, restrictions, or desires.

Adoption Process

All Applicants must: Be at least 23 years of age. Complete an adoption application to submit your adoption application. All applications MUST be answered fully. Incomplete applications will not be considered. When you press SEND, the form will be automatically emailed to Castaway Pet Rescue, Inc. Check the box to accept the liability release which indicates that you fully understand the risk of visiting and interacting with a foster home or other agreed meeting location. You will be agreeing that you and others accompanying you, WILL NOT hold Castaway Pet Rescue, Inc., its volunteers, affiliates, trainers, or veterinarians and staff liable, should injury or injuries occur, personal property is damaged, or any other health situation arise as a result of a visit to the foster home or meeting location. Bring all household members, including current dog(s), to an in-person adoption interview. Provide a copy of the most current veterinary records with proof of vaccinations, heartworm prevention (for dogs) and proof of spay/neuter (if there are currently pets in the household). One of our adoption counselors will review the application, check your vet reference, and contact your landlord (if you rent) and reply back to you. We may have additional questions or require a home visit. Once your application is approved, we will contact you to schedule a visit with the dog you are interested in. Please select a time when the entire family including current dogs can visit. NOTE: In the interest of saving dogs in short term shelters quickly, we operate on a first available, matching applicant basis. If another matching applicant is available for an earlier appointment than yours, we cannot hold the dog for the latter appointment. If the dog is adopted by an earlier applicant, effort will be made to notify any applicants with open appointments for that dog. In the case of litters of puppies, multiple applicants may be visiting and selecting the right puppy for their family. If you would consider only one particular puppy out of the litter, please make a note on your application and we will notify you if that puppy is selected prior to your appointment. Appointments are offered in the order in which matching applications are received. We make every effort to be fair to applicants, but people often select a different puppy than applied for once they meet and bond. This is as it should be. If the dog still has outstanding medical procedures to be performed, we will inform you at the time we schedule the visit with the dog. All dogs adopted through licensed rescue organizations must be spayed or neutered per law. We prefer the adoption be completed at the time of the visit if a match has been made between a dog and you. Please come prepared to take your new family member home with you. We cannot guarantee the family and dog/puppy will be a match. The adoption counselor will observe the interaction and has the right to further review the match.
