Brown County Animal Shelter / Brown County Humane Society

Established in 1976, the Brown County Humane Society (BCHS) is dedicated to the care and well-being of animals in Brown County, Ohio by improving the lives of all animals and educating our community about proper and responsible care. BCHS is committed to placing the animals that come in through cruelty, neglect, homelessness or owner surrenders into permanent, loving homes. Significant effort is directed to addressing dogs, cats and horses. However, other animal needs, such as sheep, goats, chickens, rabbits, pigs, are also addressed by BCHS when issues of neglect or cruelty are reported. Management of the Brown County (Dog) Shelter was contracted to BCHS by the Brown County Commissioners in November 2011. Since 2011 changes in Dog Shelter management and additional resources provided by BCHS have had positive impacts. The sustained low euthanization rate is a direct result of the increased collaboration between the Dog Shelter staff and BCHS volunteers as they work together to facilitate positive outcomes for these dogs. Participation in outside adoptions events has contributed to more dogs being adopted. BCHS fundraising efforts have resulted in more veterinary services for Shelter dogs. A very significant event was the demolition of the euthanasia facility on August 20, 2012. Horse cruelty and surrender cases continue to be addressed by BCHS. Assistance is also provided to responsible owners trying to find new homes (re-homing) for their horses when they are no longer able to provide care for them. Since 2009 this Program has directly handled rehabilitation and re-homing for close to 50 surrendered horses and touched the lives of many others by providing re-homing assistance to their owners. BCHS began addressing the need to rehome cats in May 2015 due to a critical hoarding situation. Due to the overwhelming response from the community on the much needed cat program, BCHS has purchased a facility to house cats and other small animals to better serve the community with the overpopulation of unwanted cats and other small animals.
