Best Friends Of Pets - Oklahoma City Pet Shelter

Best Friends Of Pets

Best Friends of Pets was formed under a similar name in 1994 to help increase pet adoptions and improve conditions for pets at the Oklahoma City Animal Shelter. Through June 2006, we provided invaluable support for the Oklahoma City Animal Welfare Division and helped increase the number of pets adopted each year from under 2,000 in 1994 to more than 4,600 in 2005. In 2005, we changed our name and started our Spay/Neuter Assistance Program (SNAP), the first year-round community spay/neuter program of its kind in the Oklahoma City area. In 2006, we started working with individuals who rescue and foster pets until they are adopted. In 2008, we changed our name one last time to better reflect our mission of helping pets in our community. In 2014, we added our SpayWay clinic, and in 2015 we ended our pet adoption program to focus on spaying and neutering. Oklahoma City, surrounding areas and our state have a pet overpopulation problem – there are too many homeless pets. Each year, local animal shelters take in more than 25,000 cats and dogs, and more than 10,000 pets are euthanized. More than 70% of the pets euthanized are adoptable and more than one-third are puppies and kittens. Best Friends of Pets seeks to reduce this needless loss of lives and works toward the day every pet has a loving home.
