There are several local rescues doing a great job working with the county shelter to re-home pets and promote the neutering of companion animals. Bedford Cares fills the niche of providing hands-on support for the humane controlling of feral cat populations. Feral cats are not good candidates for adoption, so it's best to keep them out of shelters. Instead, Bedford Cares volunteers conduct Trap Neuter and Return at feral cat colonies so their numbers do not increase and the colony caregiver can continue to provide food and shelter to a manageable number of cats. We teach property owners how to do TNR themselves, and loan them equipment. Please join us! We need volunteers to trap and transport cats, as well as to foster kittens and prepare them for adoption. We also need funds to pay for neutering and medical care of the cats.
