Adoption Process

Dogs: There is a non-refundable $10.00 application fee required. Should your application be approved, it will be kept on file for 6-months, and your $10.00 will be applied toward your adoption fee. If you do not adopt in that amount of time or your application is denied, your $10.00 will be considered a donation. We only accept online applications from individuals residing in PA, MD, WV, VA, and DC. If you live elsewhere, you must complete a paper application at the shelter. Applications submitted online from outside the accepted locations will be automatically denied and your $10.00 will NOT be refunded. Applications for puppies and popular breed dogs will be limited. Contact the shelter by email, Facebook message, phone or check our Facebook page to determine if we have reached our cut off. Once you know you are ready to adopt, you can begin to look around. The first step in our adoption process is to fill out our Adoption Application online or at the shelter. As noted above, there is a $10.00, non-refundable application fee. Application processing time can vary depending upon how long it takes for us to hear back from references, landlords if applicable (please upload your lease with your application), etc. We ask for your patience and understanding during this time, as our number one priority is to find the right placement for our animals. Once your application has been approved, you can then choose which dog you’d like to make part of your family. All individuals living in your household must meet the dog before adopting and dog-to-dog meet and greets are required, no exceptions. You will be able to take that animal home for a 2 week foster period to afford the animal time to decompress from shelter life and allow their true personalities to come out. You’ll get to know them, they’ll get to know you, and you can determine if they are the right pet for you. If they are, come back in on the scheduled day to finalize their adoption. If, for whatever reason, they are not the right pet, bring them back during the Foster period, and we will find them another home. Please keep in mind that shelter spacing is limited, therefore we cannot hold any animal while your application is being processed or while you make a decision, and the $10.00 does not count toward a deposit on any animal you may be interested in. Adoptions are processed on a first-come, first-serve, best-fit basis, and we reserve the right to deny any application for any reason. Cats: Once you know you are ready to adopt, you can begin to look around. The first step in our adoption process is to fill out our Adoption Application online or at the shelter. Application processing time can vary, but many of our cats are able to leave with an adopter same-day (so be sure to bring a cat carrier with you). We ask for your patience and understanding during this time, as our number one priority is to find the right placement for our animals. Once your application has been approved, you can then choose which cat you’d like to make part of your family. Please keep in mind that shelter spacing is limited, therefore we cannot hold any animal while your application is being processed or while you make a decision. Adoptions are processed on a first-come, first-serve, best-fit basis, and we reserve the right to deny any application for any reason. Again, be sure to bring a cat carrier with you. Keep in mind, cats can live to be 20+ years, so you will need one at some point in the cats life.
