Animal Shelter Of Schoharie Valley

We are a no-kill shelter, and do not breed discriminate. Ours is the only shelter in our county for both cats and dogs. We are funded by donations, and pay for our veterinary care and medications. We are a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, with all donations being tax-deductible to the extent allowed by law." Founded in 1975. The Animal Shelter of Schoharie Valley, Inc. was founded in 1975 by a group of residents of Schoharie County who were disturbed by the plight of the many starved, abused, and stray animals in this area. ASSV is a not-for-profit organization. It is a no-kill shelter, comprised entirely of volunteer members and Board of Directors with the exception of the shelter manager and support staff. The goal of the ASSV is to alleviate stray animal suffering and to maintain a shelter to house, feed, and care for these animals until safe and loving homes are found for them. ASSV also strives to educate the public to spay or neuter their pets to eliminate the problem of unwanted offspring.

Adoption Process

In order to adopt a cat or a dog from ASSV you must first fill out an adoption form. The applicant must be at least 21 years of age in order to adopt a cat or a dog. If the applicant rents property we must speak to the landlord by telephone, or the renter can provide us with a lease agreement. We do not operate on a “first-come first-served” basis, but evaluate all applicants and decide what is best for the pets we rescue based on the needs of the dog/cat. This is not meant to discourage adopters in any way, but simply to help them understand that we must make the tough decisions about where our pets go.
