Animal Protection Society Of Durham - Durham Pet Shelter

The Animal Protection Society of Durham (APS) is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that has been helping animals in our community since 1970, and has managed the Durham County Animal Shelter since 1990. APS relies on donations from caring individuals and corporations to feed, shelter and provide medical attention for the nearly 5,000 stray, surrendered, abandoned, abused and neglected animals we care for each year.

Adoption Process

All adoptable animals will be posted on our website under Adoptable Cats, Adoptable Dogs, or Other Animals (small pets). Animals in foster care are labeled as such on their website page. The website is the most up to date and accurate place to see what animals are available, but we often post additional pictures, videos, and stories about our adoptable animals on our Facebook and Instagram pages, so stay tuned in to those as well. If you are interested in adoption a pet that is not labeled as “in foster care” on the website, please come in to meet them in person! If you are interested in adopting a pet that is labeled “in foster care”, please download, fill out, and email the adoption forms linked at the bottom of this page to [email protected]. Please make sure you complete the entire two page application for the type of animal you are interested in adopting (Dog, Cat, or Pet for small pets like bunnies and guinea pigs). Please see the information above for how foster care visits work. Each adoption is approved on an individual basis. Some animals may not be considered appropriate for your particular situation, and so may not be adopted to you.
