Almost Home Feline Refuge is a non-profit organization whose mission is to rescue and provide shelter for feral, stray and abandoned cats in Charleston, SC county as a public benefit. According to the Feral Cat Coalition, a conservative estimate of homeless cats in America is 40 -60 million; about as many as there are house cats. Unattended street cats face death by starvation, disease, inclement weather, traffic, and predatory animals. Feral kittens that do survive spend the rest of their lives struggling to find food, repeatedly breeding - adding more homeless kittens to the population. Community education and awareness is an essential part of solving this problem. The importance of spaying and neutering needs to be emphasized to help prevent overpopulation and afford relief to the local animal shelters which are already overcrowded. Almost Home furnishes medical attention and treatment immediately to all rescues entering the refuge, as well as a loving, safe, healthy, clean and cageless environment in which to live. All cats that we rescue are examined by a Vet and given appropriate vaccinations and tested for feline AIDS and Leukemia. They are all neutered by the age of 6 months. We do not euthanize any cats unless it is medically indicated by a Vet.
