City Dogs Rescue - Washington Pet Shelter

City Dogs Rescue

City Dogs Rescue rescues adoptable dogs in overcrowded and high-kill shelters, where resources are severely limited. We offer a lifeline to as many of these wonderful pups as possible. Sadly, many of the dogs that City Dogs Rescue takes in are just days - and sometimes hours - away from being euthanized for no reason other than lack of space. By finding these dogs permanent and loving homes in the DC metropolitan area, we can enrich lives - both human and canine. We welcome your help in any capacity - through volunteering, fostering, adopting, sponsoring and/or donating. City Dogs Rescue is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that is not a "shelter." We are a network of volunteers (most will full-time jobs) who foster dogs with volunteer families and donated boarding facilities. Please remember that most of our dogs are living in the homes of our volunteers and therefore cannot be visited without an adoption application and appointment with the foster family. City Dogs Daycare serves as a foster home to some of the dogs, and can only show adoptable dogs with an appointment and completed adoption application as well.

Adoption Process

1. Adoption Application: Interested adopters should fill out an adoption application for the dog(s) you are interested in. Only one application is required and it applies for all dogs listed on your application. 2. Important Note Regarding Timing: Our adoption process is that we screen all applications to find what we believe will be the best environment for each particular dog. If we believe that we currently have a potential match for you, our typical response time is about a week. If you do not receive a response within two weeks, please assume that we have not been able to find a good match. While we had initially provided a separate response to each applicant, we have found that we cannot continue this practice given our volunteer workforce, limited administrative resources, and the increasing volume of applications. Please do not interpret a lack of response as a belief by City Dogs Rescue that you would not be able to provide a loving home for a dog. 3. Adoption Counselor: Approved Applicants will be assigned a volunteer adoption counselor, who will review the application and have a brief conversation with each applicant to determine his/her needs and preferences. 4. Reference Checks: If applicable, CDR will call the applicant’s veterinarian to ensure that previous pets have been spayed/neutered, vaccinated, and well cared for. CDR will also call references listed on the application. 5. Renters/Condo Owners: For renters, CDR will check with an applicant's landlord to ensure that dogs are permitted and that the dog of interest wouldn’t violate any size or breed restrictions. We also review condo association rules regarding pets. 6. Home Visit: CDR will visit each applicant’s home to see the environment where the dog will live and answer any questions the applicant might have. 7. Adoption Contract: If the applicant is approved for adoption and decides to adopt the dog, CDR and the prospective adopter will enter into an adoption contract. The applicant will be required to pay an adoption fee, which helps cover our costs from spay/neutering (if age appropriate), microchipping, vaccinations, and any other veterinary attention needed while in our care. The adoption fee is $395 unless otherwise specified.
