Capital Cats is a cat rescue group focusing on the Capitol Hill area of Washington, DC. We primarily assist cats who have lived among people at some point in their lives but were abandoned and then struggled to survive. These kitties are so thankful to find someone who will care for them again. We see that they are spayed/neutered and vaccinated, and then work hard to match them up with the perfect permanent home. In the meantime, they get to be spoiled rotten in our foster homes!! Capital Cats began in the early 1990s as a Trap-Neuter-Return (TNR) effort by a group of Capitol Hill residents. By 1997 it had expanded to include weekly adoption events for kittens and cats that had been abandoned. Capital Cats was incorporated as a Washington, D.C. not-for-profit corporation in 2006. Capital Cats is a tax-exempt, 501(c)(3) charitable organization: donations to Capital Cats are tax-deductible.
Prospective adopters fill in an application form at the adoption event. We do landlord and veterinary reference checks before proceeding to the next stage, which involves a home visit where the cat or kitten will be living. The cat or kitten is spayed or neutered before placement; cost is included in the adoption fee (currently $125). The contract requires that the cat or kitten be indoors-only and that it cannot be declawed. In addition, we do not place single kittens unless the household has another cat or kitten who needs a friend; otherwise it has to be two kittens together.
