The Delta Humane Society Of Louisiana - Rayville Pet Shelter

The Delta Humane Society operates in the North Louisiana delta area, one of the poorest areas in the nation. Almost a third of our population lives at or below the poverty level. We have none of the services many people take for granted such as public transportation, trash pick up, public high speed internet or animal control. There is no shelter here or in most of the adjoining parishes, an area of over 5000 sq. miles. There is no other 501c3 animal rescue operating in this area so we are the only resource for unwanted animals. Our efforts are focused on intaking animals in neglectful or harmful situations and restoring their health, both physical and mental so that they can be tranported to one of our partner rescues in other areas of the country. There, they have a much increased chance for adoption. We average having over 125 animals in foster including dogs, cats, horses and farm animals. We do all of this without a facility or any help from municipal sources. Our mission is to promote responsible and compassionate treatment of all animals. We serve the Mississippi Delta region of Louisiana and work with rescue organizations throughout the country to achieve our mission.

Adoption Process

1) The first step is to complete an adoption application.Completing an application never obligates you to adopt but it does give us a better chance of making sure the match will be a good one. As a part of reviewing your application, we will speak with both your personal and veterinary references. 2) Once we have processed the application, we will ask to visit your home for an informal visit. If possible, we like to meet all family members and pets. During the visit, we will discuss any questions or concerns you may have. 3) If the home visit goes well, we arrange for you to keep the pet for a "sleepover". That is, we want you to have the pet visit for a few days before the adoption is final. This helps to insure that your family members, lifestyle and current pets are all compatible with this possible new family member. If, after the "sleep over" we are all satisfied that it is a good match, we make the adoption final.
