Stafford County Animal Shelter - Stafford Pet Shelter

Stafford County Animal Shelter

Stafford County Animal Shelter provides a temporary safe haven for stray and lost animals and animals given up by their owners. The shelter is defined as an “open admission” shelter, meaning we turn no animal in the county away. As an open-admission shelter, we take in ill and injured animals and those that are not immediate candidates for adoption. We receive pets that are no longer wanted, pets from people who can no longer care for them, as well as stray animals. Our goal is to find a loving home for every adoptable pet at our shelter. Please join us in this venture. There are many way you can help. The shelter is open Monday - Friday 11:00am - 5:30pm and Saturday 9:30am - 4:00pm. An Animal Control Officer is available 24 hours a day.

Adoption Process

Dogs and cats may be adopted from the Stafford County Animal Shelter located at 26 Frosty Lane Stafford, VA 22554. There is a $20 adoption fee for dogs and a $10 adoption fee for cats. All puppies and kittens adopted from the shelter are given the first series of shots and are dewormed for round worms only. Adoption is available to citizens within the following jurisdictions: Caroline, Culpeper, Fauquier, Fredericksburg, King George, Prince William, Spotsylvania, Stafford. If you do not live in one of these jurisdictions, we have options for you. Per state law section 3.2-6546, you may adopt an animal that has been fixed. You can make arrangements with a local veterinarian in our area to have the animal fixed within a few days and Stafford County Animal Control will transport the animal to that veterinarian the day of the service. You, as the new adopter, will pick up the animal from the veterinarian when it is ready to go home. All fees to the veterinarian for pre-op and the operation must be paid in full by the adoptee before surgery begins. This arrangement is contingent upon the animal not having any serious medical conditions that would prevent the veterinarian to fix the animal within a few days.
