RappCats is a private, non-profit organization that rescues, cares for, and finds loving homes for abandoned, abused, neglected, injured, and homeless cats and kittens throughout Rappahannock County. RappCats is not affiliated with the County government and relies entirely on the generosity of people like you to support our operations. We operate the RappCats Adoption Center, a cage-free, no-kill facility that is the only state-approved cat shelter in Rappahannock County. The Rappahannock County animal shelter only assists dogs, so our assistance for cats and kittens is critical. RappCats is operated by volunteers and funded through donations alone. We have a team of volunteers who socialize rescue cats and kittens to enable them to find wonderful, loving homes. We provide foster homes for kittens, nursing mothers, and certain special needs cats. We assist members of the community to spay, neuter and vaccinate cats and kittens in Rappahannock County. RappCats provides assistance to local families, senior citizens, and others in the community who need help affording food and veterinary care for their cats. We help members of the community trap stray cats, and then offer the needed follow-up care. RappCats provides information resources to the community.
All potential adopters must fill out an application. A RappCats adoption counselor will work with you to fill out this application. We will discuss with you the type of cat you’re looking for, and your home environment. We prefer that our cats be adopted as indoor companions. Cats that stay indoors live longer, healthier lives. We ask for a reference, preferably from your veterinarian. We may also call your landlord, if you are a renter. Usually, the process to check references takes a business day or two. If you have not yet met the selected cat, we will arrange an in-person or virtual meeting. We also do a brief home visit to ensure that everyone (including any other pets) will be comfortable with your new cat. During COVID precautions, we are doing virtual home visits. You must sign our adoption contract, in which you promise to care for the cat, and to return the cat to us if you can no longer care for him or her. We do not ever want our cat to wind up in a public shelter. We charge an adoption fee of $110-150, which helps to cover the costs of spaying or neutering the cat, needed medical care and all appropriate shots. We will return the adoption fee if you decide the cat does not fit and you return the cat to us within the first 30 days.
