Post Falls Animal Safety - Post Falls Pet Shelter

Post Falls Police Department’s animal shelter, the Canine Control Center (CCC), facilitates the adoption of dogs we have impounded under specific guidelines and conditions. Our goal is to place unclaimed dogs into permanent, loving homes or rescue organizations through an easy, affordable adoption process. Post Falls Police impounds dogs that are picked up within the city of Post Falls. After three weekdays, excluding holidays, without being claimed by an owner, a dog may become available for adoption. Many dogs come in with medical conditions or behavioral issues that need to be addressed before sending them to a new home. Kootenai County Sheriff’s Office impounds dogs picked up in the county. They utilize space we provide to them at the CCC. After five weekdays without being claimed, Post Falls Police assumes ownership of the county’s impounded dogs and may place them for adoption.

Adoption Process

We encourage anyone who is interested in adoption to schedule an appointment to see the dogs at the shelter. Prior to adoption availability, names and phone numbers are collected from interested parties at the time of an in-person viewing only. The shelter manager will notify if or when a dog becomes available for adoption. Once adoptable, mingling with dogs in the shelter’s play area is allowed. At the discretion of the shelter manager or animal safety officer, citizens may also bring in other dogs they own to determine compatibility. The CCC is open Monday through Friday between 10:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. and located at 1725 E. Polston Ave. Appointments are scheduled with the shelter manager during weekdays. On weekends, appointments are made with an animal safety officer upon availability. The adoption fee is $40.00, which includes the DAPPV vaccine and spay or neuter procedure as needed. If the dog is unaltered, we hold the dog until they have been spayed or neutered before releasing to take home. New owners are required to obtain and show proof of a rabies vaccine and city or county dog license within 30 days of the adoption.
