Newberg Animal Shelter - Newberg Pet Shelter

Newberg Animal Shelter

Newberg Animal Shelter is located in the gorgeous Oregon wine country. For over four decades, Newberg Animal Shelter was operated by Newberg-Dundee Animal Control under the Newberg-Dundee Police Department. Newberg Animal Shelter Friends organization (NASF) is the 501c3 fundraising organization that has been raising money since 2000 for the construction of a new shelter building. The City’s previous shelter building was built as a high school project in the 70’s, was a small one room building in poor repair that held both cats and dogs. In 2011, NASF had raised over $500k and construction on the current building began. In 2013, with the help of the city we moved into our new facility. Construction was not complete on the building, but the old shelter building was falling down. NASF has continued to raise funds to make improvements to the building. On July 1st, 2014, due to budget reasons, the City of Newberg announced that they cut their Animal Control program. There is no longer an Animal Control program run by the city of Newberg, the shelter lost the one Animal Control officer who managed the shelter. All dog control operations for Newberg and Dundee are managed with Yamhill County Dog Control. In March 2015, the 3 year lease contract with the City of Newberg for the use of the building was signed. On July 1st, 2015 we have hired our first employee, a shelter manager! Since that time we have hired more shelter staff and our adoption numbers have continued to significantly increase with each year. We have also built strong partnerships with the community to provide services to people and their pets. In March 2017, we completed building improvements and passed inspection by Yamhill County to receive our kennel license. In late 2017, the City of Newberg announced they would be selling the shelter building and property to raise money for a communcations upgrade. In December 2018, NASF purchased the building and property from the City of Newberg. Our Buy the Building campaign sponsored by the Austin family and the Oregon Community Foundation made this possible with the support of our amazing community.

HNBAR was founded in 2006 when a tragic accident took the life of a man who had several horses. His widow was not involved with the animals, so she didn't know what to do. When Joy learned of this she just knew in her heart that it was her calling to step in and help this woman and the animals that were left behind. The calls to help animals didn't stop after that, so on August 3, 2011 H
