Adoption Process

After submitting your application, please be sure to check any spam folders or filters for email responses from MHCSR. Please allow at least 3 days for us to process your application. If we feel that your application will meet our guidelines we will be back in touch with you by phone for an interview. To help ensure the best possible placement of our rescued dogs and to help us determine that the proposed adoption is in the best interest of the dog and you and your family, please complete and submit this application before inquiring about a specific dog. If you are not ready to adopt at this time please note on the application when you will be ready. Applications we receive that do not specify any of our available dogs will be held until the applicant notifies us that there is an available dog they would like to adopt. We keep applications active for 90 days. If a match has not been found during that time, please contact us to keep your application active. If you acquire a dog from another source, please notify us so we can deactivate your application. We do NOT place animals in homes where current or past pets are not properly vaccinated and are not on heartworm preventative, spayed or neutered unless there is a medical reason for not doing so. We only place dogs in homes where they will be indoor pets and never left outdoors when no one is home. For all puppies and almost all of our dogs, a fenced yard that is appropriate for the dog that you want to adopt is required. It may be possible for a well-socialized, leash-trained adult or senior collie or sheltie to do fine in a condo/townhouse/apartment environment, where all outside activities take place on a leash. We would determine this on a case-by-case basis. We DO NOT approve invisible/electric fences, dog runs, or tie out chains. Adoption fees are charged to cover the costs of rescuing and rehabilitating our dogs. The single major cost of these dogs is our veterinary expenses to cover spaying and/or neutering and basic health care. This donation is tax deductible as allowed by law and helps to offset the costs that we have incurred for the dog’s care and housing during his or her stay with our rescue. The adoption donation does not entirely cover the investments that we have made in these dogs, so if you were in a position to give more, we would be honored to receive your additional donation. All adoption donations go directly toward the needs of our dogs.
