Mayfield-graves County Animal Shelter - Mayfield Pet Shelter

The Board of Directors and all the employees of the Mayfield/Graves County Animal Shelter are aware of the focus on the movement toward no-kill shelters across the country. We are often asked if we are a no-kill shelter. The answer is always, "No, but we would love to be". Unfortunately, the reality in Mayfield and Graves County is that the overwhelming number of animals coming into our shelter (over 2,500 a year) forces us to euthanize healthy animals every week. Until the number of animals brought into the shelter is drastically reduced, we have no other option. We care deeply for our homeless animals and we do grieve, very deeply, the death of every one that is euthanized because space becomes an issue before a responsible, loving home or rescue can be found. If you are considering a pet for your family, please check out the available animals at the shelter. If you are the owner of a cat or dog, please consider having it spayed or neutered. If we all work together to be responsible pet owners, the time will come when our shelter will no longer have to euthanize animals and we will be able to find a loving home for every animal that comes into our care. Our prayer is that our community can unite to stop this tragic end of innocent lives. We are proud to announce that since 2012 we have been able to lower our euthanasia rate on dogs by 17.88%. It may not sound like much but this is a huge decrease thanks, in part, to the work of our community members in become more responsible pet owners. We also are grateful for the opportunity to work with Petsmart Rescue Waggin'. Our cat euthanasia rate, since 2012, has decreased by 15.62%. This is an exciting number to read! We have teamed with Mayfield City officials to create a TNR (Trap, Neuter, Release) program to help control the feral cat population around the city. In addition to these measures, we have also been able to have low cost spay/neuter vouchers for cats and dogs throughout Graves County. Most of those funds have been made possible through private donations.
