Lucas County Canine Care & Control handles stray and homeless dogs and enforces dog laws in Lucas County, which is in northwest Ohio, including the City of Toledo. We handle about 300 dogs monthly. We have a staff of 25 people, including six Canine Control Officers, four office staff, seven kennel staff, one veterinarian, two veterinary technicians, a veterinary assistant, a community outreach coordinator, a personalized adoption counselor, a behavior technician and three management positions. Our department is funded primarily through the purchase of dog licenses. Your dog license purchase not only helps to protect your dog, but also helps us care for homeless and stray dogs, protect the community from loose and dangerous dogs, and help reunite lost dogs and their owners.
The Lucas County Canine Care & Control has many adoptable dogs looking for a good home. The selection of adoptable dogs in our care changes often, so please keep checking back to see our current residents. If you would like to meet a dog please come down to the shelter for a meet and greet. You can spend some time getting to know them and we hope you’ll find the perfect match. Once you meet the dog you are interested in adding to your family there is a brief questionnaire to fill out. We ask every adopter to bring in all family members, both human and canine, to meet the new potential dog before finalizing the adoption. All dogs are spayed or neutered before going to their new homes and all have had a behavioral evaluation, a medical evaluation including a heartworm test if over six months old, initial vaccinations (DHPP, Bordetella and Rabies, if old enough), a microchip and are dewormed. All of this, plus a dog license, will be yours for the adoption fee of only $125. Want to make sure your new furry friend is a good fit for your family? Doing a Foster-to-Adopt trial period is a great way to learn if the dogs is a good fit for your family prior to committing to adoption. When you Foster-to-Adopt, you take the dog(s) home for 14 days before deciding whether the relationship is meant to be. The dog will relax in your home and their true personality will start to shine. You will also confirm that your new dog is a good fit for your lifestyle and that all members of your family get along well.
