Adoption Process

To begin the adoption process for a dog, please visit our adopt page, and then complete an adoption application online. It is not a commitment to adopt; it just begins the process and shows interest in a particular animal. Once you have completed an application, we will call you to talk about a specific dog in whom you’ve expressed interest. Our staff contacts people in the order the applications are received. We try to get back to everyone with a phone call or email update (please check spam filters) within 3 full BUSINESS days (M-F) of receiving the application, but we ask that applicants be patient. Our rescue has a small staff and it is not always possible to respond to every application. If you have not heard from us by the fourth business day, please assume the dog has been adopted or has a pending meet and greet. If you have been approved for a meet and greet, we arrange for you to meet the dog, either at an adoption event or at our office. We ask that all members of the household, including any resident dogs, are there to meet your prospective dog. Often, if all goes well, you can go home with your new companion the same day, though for some dogs - very young puppies and special-needs animals - we will schedule a home visit before finalizing the adoption. We do not do foster-to-adopt for dogs that are available for adoption. If you have applied for a dog that is going to our Saturday adoption event and have not heard back regarding your application, we recommend that you go to the adoption event. Adopters with adoption meetings may choose to pass, and the dog will go up for general adoption at the event. ou may meet another dog that pulls at your heart instead! Please note that if you rent your home, emailing or faxing the mandatory copy of your lease agreement or landlord approval will help expedite the process. Please bring it with you if you are going to an event. The lease must specifically state that you are allowed to have a dog in your home. If you are interested in a large breed dog, please make there are no size or breed restrictions in your lease agreement. o begin the adoption process for a cat, please visit our adopt page. Most of our adoptable cats and kittens are hosted at partner sites throughout the East Bay and Marin. It will say where a particular cat or kitten is located on their individual profiles. For cats at our adoption partners, please visit the stores during their business hours. Adoption applications are available there, and most locations can screen and adopt cats on site. Please bring a copy of your lease stating pets are allowed and call the store to make sure the cat is still available before heading over. For cats in foster or at Hopalong offices, please complete an adoption application online. It is not a commitment to adopt; it just begins the process and shows interest in a particular animal. Once you have completed an application, we will call you to talk about a specific cat in whom you’ve expressed interest. We try to get back to everyone with a phone call or email update (please check spam filters) within 3 full BUSINESS days of receiving the application. Please note that if you rent your home, emailing or faxing a landlord approval will help expedite the process. After you’ve been approved, we arrange for you to meet the cat. We do not do foster-to-adopt for kittens that are available for adoption but will occasionally allow it for cats with special needs or on a case-by-case basis for adults during kitten season.
