Friends of Jessamine County Animals, Inc. is a federally recognized 501c3 non-profit organization that was founded in March 2010 by a group of avid animal lovers. As volunteers for our community's local animal shelter, we experienced firsthand the number of homeless animals in need of loving homes, as well as the amount of neglect and lack of education that existed in our own community. We decided that change needed to be done, and it could start with us. We organized our own rescue organization and started providing temporary homes for some of these needy animals. The number of active fosters and volunteers steadily grew until we became a very active rescue group who saves nearly 300 animals per year! The majority of our animals come from local shelters where they were in danger of being euthanized or were victims of neglect or abuse. Overcrowding is a huge problem in shelters across the United States so the more animals that rescue groups can pull out the more room is made for others. Our animals stay in our foster homes where they become healthy, social and ready for adoption. Our volunteers attend weekly adoption events in hopes of placing our animals into their furever homes. Our organization is governed by a 5-member advisory board. Our directors, fosters, officers and advisory board members are all volunteers- no one holds a paid position. All expenses are funded through our adoption fees and donations alone. Our adoption process includes an application, adoption fee, home visit, vet reference and landlord approval if a renter. We try very hard to ensure that every adoption is a good match for both the animal as well as the individual. We feel that by having the animals live with us in our owns homes we get to know them very well and can effectively determine what their individual needs are. Our mission is to bring about change in the care of animals in Jessamine County, Kentucky by way of education and community awareness.
