Arizona Humane Society - Sunnyslope - Phoenix Pet Shelter

Arizona Humane Society - Sunnyslope

Since 1957, the Arizona Humane Society (AHS) has fostered the belief that every pet deserves a good life. Our mission is to save the most vulnerable animals and enrich the lives of pets and people. What once began as a small shelter established by a compassionate group of volunteers has since grown to become the state’s largest animal welfare and protection agency, as well as the state’s designated responder for animals in distress during natural disasters. Throughout the years, a commitment to thinking differently about animal welfare has led to countless first-of-their-kind programs, services, education and communication techniques that have been emulated by organizations all over the world. Our lifesaving programs, including our Second Chance Animal Trauma Hospital™, Mutternity Suites, Kitten Nursery, Bottle Baby Kitten ICU and Parvo Puppy ICU save the lives of pets routinely euthanized in shelters. And our comprehensive medical, behavioral rehabilitation, surrender intervention and spay/neuter initiatives have helped us save an additional 80,000 lives over the last five years and become a safety net for the Valley’s most vulnerable pets. As a modern open admissions shelter, the Arizona Humane Society sees cases daily that are beyond the scope of imagination - abuse, neglect, abandonment. Our Ethical No-Kill Philosophy ensures we never euthanize a pet for space or length of time. And although we can not save them all, there is not a day that goes by where we don’t try. For those we can save, we are blessed with many miracles… and the joy of pets.

Adoption Process

Step 1: Search our website and check out all of the adoptable dogs, cats and critters we currently have at our four adoption centers. Step 2: Visit one of our adoption centers to meet your pet. Meet with an adoption specialist to ensure that your pet is the right fit for you. To help find your best match, feel free to bring your children and furry family members down to our adoption locations for a play date. Step 3: Take your pet home and begin loving your new family member! Our adoption specialists are happy to work with you to find an animal that matches your lifestyle. We do ask that adopters be 18 years of age or older and able to provide photo identification. We also understand that sometimes circumstances change, and our 100 percent adoption guarantee ensures that you can return your pet to us at any time within the pet’s lifetime for any reason with an adoption return appointment. Appointment availability varies. If you would like to schedule an appointment to return a pet you adopted from AHS, please call our Pet Resource Center at 602.997.7585 ext. 3800.

While delivering blankets to the East Maricopa County shelter, I walked past what appeared to be an empty kennel. However upon closer inspection, I noticed a tiny, white, shivering little dog huddled in the corner. Her kennel plaque stated “Stray”, although I couldn’t imagine how this little girl could possibly have gotten lost, as I was pretty sure she was around for the Last Supper. When h
