Allen County Animal Rescue Facility - Acarf

ACARF (Allen County Animal Rescue Facility) is a nonprofit no-kill animal shelter in rural La Harpe, Kansas. Our shelter was established by a grassroots group of dedicated people who wanted to give vulnerable animals in southeast Kansas the help and hope they did not have before our organization was created. ACARF rescues, rehabilitates, and finds homes for the lost and unwanted dogs and cats of our area. Although we have small contracts to take in the animals impounded by animal control officers in a few surrounding towns, we also take in many animals who are found or surrendered by the general public. ACARF is not funded by any government entity. The work that we do, saving as many animals as we can, continues primarily through donations by caring, animal-loving people...like you!

Adoption Process

First, you need to fill out an application. You can fill out and submit an online adoption application or fill one out at the shelter. Please allow us a minimum of 24 hours to review your application and check with your vet and landlord (if applicable). Although it helps to be the first person to file an application for a pet, this may not guarantee that you will actually be the chosen adopter. Our first concern must always be finding the best situation–for our adopters, and for our adoptable pets. Once you have been approved to adopt an animal, we will make an appointment with our contracted veterinary care provider (Red Barn Veterinary Service) to have your pet spayed or neutered. Spaying/neutering our adopted animals is required by the State of Kansas. In addition, we now microchip all our adopted pets before they leave the shelter. Our adoption fee includes all shots, your pet’s spay/neuter surgery, plus microchipping. In addition, all adopting families now receive one free month of insurance for their pet through 24PetWatch. When your paperwork is completed, the adoption fee has been paid, spaying/neutering is done, and your dog/cat has been microchipped, you can take your new pet home! Usually, you can pick up your pet the next day following their spay/neuter surgery, either at the veterinarian’s office or at the shelter. Some adopters choose to have their pet spayed/neutered with their regular veterinarian (and that veterinarian is not at The Red Barn). If you do not use the services of our contracted vet and take your pet out unaltered, there will be an additional spay/neuter deposit of $125 (in addition to the adoption fee). The $125 deposit is refunded when you submit proof of spay/neuter, which must be done within 90 days. In this case, you would also be responsible for all spay/neuter charges. Some of our long-distance adopters find this option preferable to making two long trips. We hope this makes it easier! Whoever said, "money can't buy love," never paid an adoption fee! Welcome to a lifetime of love and happiness!
